At the University of West Florida's exemplary library , located here in Pensacola, Florida, I found a DVD of Vintage Oil Industry Cartoons which span from 1935 to 1956. I decided to share the DVD here because it's an interesting foray into early and mid 20th century propaganda. The film also has other engaging hallmarks including the graphics and artwork. was released in 1990 by HBO's America Undercover series. The movie revolves around a group of characters who live in an old crumbling hotel in downtown Los Angeles, skid row central.
It's an interesting 48 minutes of voyeurism, peeking into the lives of the down and out and struggling.
There could not be a better choice for narrating the film that Charles Bukowski. Wow. Perfect.

This documentary exposes the changes in our still relatively new internet world. It started with the MP3. That was the beginning of the end for thousands of record stores across the United States.

If you've ever felt the excitement when you cross the threshold of an indie record store and not knowing where in the store to start searching, this is the movie for you. It will bring back all the memories of friendships and bands formed in record stores and how they were an important part of the music scene just as much as any band was.

13TH FLOOR ELEVATORS The Psychedelic Sounds of 1966

Probably one of my favorite psych LP covers of all time. And one of my best record finds of the year. A couple of weeks ago I was out and about and hit a local thrift store. Apparently I had gotten there just in time. They seemed to be doing a little housecleaning and had stuffed all of their vinyl in a shopping cart which was sitting off in a lonely little dirty corner of the store. On top of the stack I spied some old psych records - none were incredibly rare but excited me nonetheless to have found. Among them was If, Zephyr, Vanilla Fudge, It's A Beautiful Day, Spooky Tooth, The Plastic Ono Band, Fleetwood Mac (pre-Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham), Cream, Canned Heat and Various Artists - The Naked Carmen, whose back cover consisted of cigar bands with marijuana references. Granted, not all of these are psychedelic bands but for $1.00, you can't beat the price.
Competition today is fierce and finding anything at thrift stores has become a great challenge for me so any score, particularly of some of these bands, is rare at best. But I don't remember seeing 13th Floor Elevators "The Psychedelic Sounds of" LP among the stack. I came back a week later and there on the bottom of the stack was the record. The cover is in pretty good condition, the vinyl looks pretty beat but still very playable and enjoyable due to the lovely cracks and pops that emanate from the speakers mixed in with the Elevators' acid dropping sounds.
After doing a bit of reading, I did find that it is apparently a bit rare, at least according to the Goldmine Price Guide I have in my possession. Don't get me wrong, I do not put too much faith in price guides per se, but seeing that it apparently had a decently sizeable high price, it looks to be kinda hard to find these days. In any case, I'm glad to own it no matter its condition.
And my ol' buddy, Nathan Nothin', over at Nothin' Sez Somethin' has a blog you should always pay attention to, and especially right now as he's been posting some great old psych records. And of course I love reading his posts - pretty much anything he writes.
So this post goes out to him. Maybe he gave me some good luck in finding some of these psych records, especially the 13th Floor Elevators.
And still to this day, I get a little twinge of regret for not grabbing The Seeds LP I saw in a stack at Goodwill about 5 years ago. The record was beat but the cover was still acceptable. It was only a dollar. What was I thinking?

One of the nicest people I know got me a Meat Shits shirt! So here it is in all its glory and a pic of me too. The shirt is offensive and disgusting to the masses. But fuck 'em. I'm not politically correct.

As schoolchildren, little girls like myself were subjected to The Talk. Lectures about menstruation were in our near future. Oh horror of horrors it was to hear about how we were going to have to go through this and boys didn't have to.
When I was a kid, I moved around a lot. I wasn't subjected to The Talk at school once. I had it at least twice. First was an elementary school. A note was sent home to our parents to let them know we were going to see a film on having our periods. Menstruation wasn't something we girls went on and on about. We just knew we didn't want to go through with it. I mean it sounded horrible.
When I got to junior high 7th grade I was subjected to The Talk again. This time teachers took us to the auditorium and told us all about what Alice Cooper sang about in this video.
The one thing that stuck in my head that a teacher told us was "You're going to get cramps and you might want to take some aspirin for it. But don't do that. You can just deal with it."
The only thing I wanted to deal with was sticking a maxi pad on her forehead and getting a morphine IV drip.

Kollected Works is a collection of the "best of" Klark Kent (also known as Stewart Copeland), which features all the songs, "Guerilla" is uncredited, but appears as an extra track, from his debut studio album Klark Kent, as well as some newer songs. At least one recording, "Strange Things Happen", seems to have been recorded around the time of Copeland's journey to Africa, from which came his LP and film The Rhythmatist.

Four singles were released under the "Klark Kent" name, three of which were from the 1980 LP: "Don't Care", "Away from Home", and "Ritch in a Ditch". (The "T" from "Ritch in a Ditch" was omitted for the album version.) "Too Kool to Kalypso" was a non-album track; however, it was one of the most well-known under the 'Kent' name.

Colorblind & Daltonic were primarily the same band. We needed to change the name due to a conflict with another band. Daltonic was a better name anyway.

In 1992, Daltonic recorded a 4 song demo “Revolution Wind” (Skott Wade - vocals, Brian Hull - drums, Jon D’Uva - Guitar, Mike Issler - Bass & Guitar).

Hard was later released on a Suburban Voice 7″ compilation w/ Verbal Assault & Shattered Silence.

June of 1993, Daltonic (Skott Wade - vocals, Brian Hull - drums, Jon D’Uva - Guitar, Tim Cabana - Bass) once again went into the studio and recorded 4 new songs for a 7″ which was released in 1994 on Suburban Voice.

January 1994, Daltonic (Skott Wade - vocals, Brian Hull - drums, Jon D’Uva - Guitar, Tim Cabana - Bass) re-recorded Grains of Sand along with 2 new songs for our 2nd 7″ which was released later in 1994 by David Grenier on his old Vigilance Records label.

June-July 1994, Daltonic went on the “Lookin’ for Luv” US tour. The guitarist at the time Jon D’Uva was the only person with the forethought of realizing how bad the tour was going to be and he declined to go with us. Therefore Skott kicked him out of the band, Tim Cabana played guitar and Aaron Dalbec of Converge fame played bass for us during the tour. Our van broke down in Las Vegas and after losing 75 cents in a slot machine my gambling experience in Vegas was over. We rented a van to finish the tour costing the band (meaning me) many, many hundreds of dollars. I still have yet to be paid back. Thanks guys!

The experience of being in Daltonic was awesome, my first “real band”. And in 1995, the band went its separate ways. Several years later Skott reformed the band with completely new members and wrote all new music. I’m still wondering why they were called Daltonic.

A few years ago I was in a pawn shop looking for rare CDs to sell and found a copy of this Hendrix LP in a stack of otherwise crappy records. This LP cover is of the French release. Different covers can be found in the download file. I really loved this record because it was not polished and you can hear Jimi talking and laughing and making jokes between songs. Buddy Miles also appears on this release.

1993. Cupertino, CA. Right in the heart of what was soon to become (for a time) the new economic heart of America, Silicon Valley, came a hair-raising, filling-rattling scream of rage. Hidden behind the pristine office parks and suburban strip malls, a seething force of paranoid aggression was brooding, and its name was Mohinder. For a little over a year, Mohinder captured the attention of the Bay Area's alienated hardcore underground, providing a Northern California counterpart to the burgeoning San Diego art-punk scene (Mohinder, like Heroin, Antioch Arrow, et al, was associated with the notorious Gravity Records) with their brief but absurdly powerful bursts of shambolic noise and instantly legendary live performances. By the end of 1994 Mohinder was only a memory, the brevity of the band's existence a testament to its unsustainably fierce, almost superhuman energy.

Members went on to such bands as Jenny Piccolo, Indian Summer, The Anasazi, Calm, Duster, A-Set, and Makara.

A Skateboard Party is a live album by the Dead Kennedys and was released in August 1983 on Starving Missile Records in cooperation with Alternative Tentacles as a limited edition release. It features an exchange where Jello Biafra asks what the audience wants, a girl yells, "Autograph, goddammit!", prompting Jello to retort with, "I'll autograph it with my dental chart."

The concerts took place in Stuttgart and Munich, on September 13, 1982, and September 15, 1982, respectively.

An anecdote follows about ASSÜCK:
I was slaving away at $5.85 an hour in 1997 working for the cheapest jerk in town at his oh so swanky record store. We sold a shitload of ASSÜCK LPs - yes, the vinyl sold more than the CD version did. An old man strolled in one afternoon, a chap I'd never seen before. He walked into the vinyl room and grabbed ASSÜCK and brought it up to the counter. Okay, that's a first, I thought! I asked him if there was anything else I could help him with and he answered with a curt "No!" He said nothing else, grabbed the record and walked out.
My guess is that it was a pissed off preacher who was going to take it to his next sermon, wailing over the devil corrupting kid's lives.
I never found out what this man's deal was or why he was so abrupt with me. He sure seemed pissed off. I did tell him to enjoy his record as he stomped out.

Maximillian Colby was an Emocore band formed in the early 1990s in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Never reaching much popularity outside of Harrisonburg during their lifespan, they established a unique sound melding epic post-rock and punk, recognized years later by bands like City of Caterpillar, A Day in Black and White, Circle Takes the Square and Envy. The band never released a true full length CD or LP, only a few EPs, splits, and compilation features. Unfortunately, Maximillian Colby's time together was cut short with the sudden death of bassist Bob Baynor in 1995. Following this, the three remaining members went on to form Sleepytime Trio, Supine to Sit, Bats and Mice, and Rah Bras. A discography of their sixteen recorded songs can be found on Lovitt Records.

Indian Summer was an early and influential American emocore band originally from Oakland, California. Their sound leaned heavily on loud-soft dynamics, pushed to the extremes on either end. Many of their songs built up to chaotic, cathartic climaxes; in which the singer screamed the lyrics (often past the point of easy intelligibility) while the band tore into their instruments. The other end of the spectrum involved spoken or whispered lyrics, coupled with delicately picked single note guitar lines and light drumming.

Fairweather was an American rock band from Virginia that has released two full-length albums on Equal Vision Records: If They Move...Kill Them (2001) and Lusitania (2003). The band also released several demos and the Alaska EP.

the band booked dates with Thursday, Brand New, Saves The Day, The Movielife, Piebald, Onelinedrawing, Codeseven, and other nationally known touring acts.

The played their final show at St. Andrews Church in College Park, Maryland, with Darkest Hour, Age of Ruin, StarsHideFire, and Good Clean Fun.

Gaye Bykers On Acid were formed in late 1984 by Ian Reynolds (Robber) and Ian Hoxley (Mary). They were later joined by guitarist and art student Tony Horsfall and drummer Kevin Hyde. Their first gig was at the Princess Charlotte in Leicester in mid-1985.

Their first releases - the single Everything's Groovy Baby and the Nosedive Karma EP - were both recorded in Leeds with Jon Langford of The Mekons, and released on the InTape label.^[1] They then signed to Virgin Records releasing the albums Drill Your Own Hole and Stewed To The Gills. The vinyl version of Drill Your Own Hole was pressed without a hole in the centre, so it was necessary to literally drill your own hole in order to play it.^[1] The album spent one week at number 95 in the UK Albums Chart in November 1987.^[2]

They also played gigs (dressed in women's clothing) under the name 'Lesbian Dopeheads on Mopeds', supporting themselves, and thus getting paid twice. They also performed as a fictitious East German thrash punk band "Rektüm" (they claimed to have jumped over the Berlin Wall), recording an LP Sakredanus and an EP Real Horror Show under the name.

Trenchmouth was a Chicago-based band that fused hardcore with post-punk, no wave, reggae, jazz, industrial, and funk to create a manic and danceable hybrid completely their own. Throughout its existence, the band consisted of Damon Locks (vocals/percussion), Chris DeZutter (guitar), Wayne Montana (bass), and Fred Armisen on drums. Their third LP, Trenchmouth vs. The Light of the Sun, was released on East West Records, a division of Elektra Records. Armisen went on to be a cast member of Saturday Night Live. Locks went on to be in Super ESP and later reconvened with Montana to form The Eternals.

Native Nod were an emocore band formed in the early 90's based in the New York / New Jersey area where they'd often play shows. Their discography Today Puberty, Tomorrow The World is often considered one of the milestones in emo. Their music is a mix of dynamic slowed-down melodic parts, sometimes with spoken word vocals and fast energetic parts with half-screaming vocals. Their lyrics are well-worded, sometimes cryptic and hard to decipher. With their innovative style they heavily influenced the hardcore scene long before the term became a commercial success.

In their short lifetime as a band they only released 9 songs, divided amongst the 3 seven inch EPs Bread, Answers, and Lower GI Bleed. These 9 songs can be found on the Gern Blandsten Records discography Today Puberty, Tomorrow The World.

Chris Leo moved on to form The Van Pelt and later The Lapse, today performing as "Vague Angels". Dave Lerner joined Ted Leo and the Pharmacists and plays guitar and sings in "Spectacular Bird." Chris and Danny Leo are the brothers of Ted Leo. Danny Leo formed "tHE hOLY cHILDHOOD" and plays drums in "Dutchess" and "the Gang". Justin Simon played in We Acediasts while living in Japan, and now lives in New York, runs Mesh-Key Records and plays guitar in "Invisible Conga People."
